Hamburg: Where Wind Energy Meets Hydrogen Innovation
Hamburg has established itself as a global hub for renewable energy and a key player in the energy transition. As the international capital of wind energy, the city hosts around 1,500 companies and 25,000 professionals working in the renewable energy sector. Leading global wind energy firms, including Nordex, Siemens Gamesa, and Vestas, have their headquarters in the region, reinforcing Hamburg’s role as a powerhouse for sustainable energy solutions.
Leading Europe’s Green Hydrogen Revolution
Hamburg is not only a wind energy leader but also at the forefront of green hydrogen innovation. One of the city's most ambitious projects is the Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub (HGHH). Located on the site of the former Moorburg coal-fired power plant, this project will house a 100-megawatt electrolysis facility producing 10,000 tons of green hydrogen annually from 2027. This initiative is a major step toward decarbonizing the industrial and maritime sectors, using green hydrogen to replace fossil fuels.
Another cutting-edge development is the Quest One Gigahub in Hamburg-Rahlstedt, which started operations in October 2024. This state-of-the-art facility enables mass production of electrolysis stacks, a crucial technology for scaling up green hydrogen production. This large-scale manufacturing hub significantly accelerates the hydrogen economy.
Hamburg’s strategic location and world-class port infrastructure position it as a vital hub for the import and distribution of green hydrogen across Europe. With a growing network of industrial partners and research institutions, the city is leading efforts to create a fully integrated hydrogen economy. Hamburg’s hydrogen import strategy is set to ensure in future a reliable supply of CO₂-free energy to industries and transport networks across the continent.
